Residents of the Adumim bloc, especially those in areas adjoining the desert and/or construction sites are urged to take extra precautions against the pesky sandfly. Often called “no-see-‘ums” due to their small size, sandflies pack a bite that can lead to serious skin lesions. These lesions, called cutaneous leishmaniasis, are caused by a protozoan parasite that lives in the sandfly. The crater-like lesions may develop in only a few days after being bitten. Left too long without treatment, these lesions may leave scarring, and, in extreme cases, the parasite may cause damage to internal organs.
While M.A. health officials have reported a decrease in the number of people who’ve been bitten, preventative measures are still highly recommended. The most effective preventative measure is to apply insect repellant with a high concentration of DEET. You can also mix the repellant with sun tan lotion, coconut oil or any other oil. Placing a mosquito repelling device in your home is also recommended.
